Created for Fallout: New California, the goal of Vault 18 was to create a place that was respectful to the series lore, created an atmosphere that felt like home, gave a sense of immense scale with had a unified appearance, allowed for gameplay flow, narrative direction, and facilitated the open world quests.
I believe I achieved that. Started in 2012, Vault 18 was originally made of just kit piece from Fallout 3's Creation Kit, the GECK, but in 2015 I decided on a new approach and drafted the new core on a sheet of paper. in January 2017 I replaced the old kit with my own meshes made in 3Ds Max and textures made in Quixel Suite. The Fallout 3 textures were all 512 or 1024. I rebaked new 4096 normals for all of them and gave them a new shaders set using height, cube maps, and new diffuse. My new meshes make up 95% of the Vault now.
I also navmeshed and optimized the entire environment myself. It took 3 1/2 months to build, with 2 years of adjustments after that.
