Vault 18 Gear Door

After several years of seeing the Fallout 3 drill style door representing Vault 18, I decided it was time to give us our very own gear door. This was a blend of Fallout 1's iconic Vault 13 "Hand" style Safe n' Seal type door, which I think was actually a tongue in cheek joke animation, and Fallout 4's new type of door. I wanted to do the best of both worlds while creating something unique.

Ours uses a articulating arm and 3 drill bits to latch onto the door and rotate a big piston, which releases the steam valve that holds the door in place, and then pulls it out by a series of hydraulic gears before rolling it aside. Finally it pulls back to reveal the door as it folds up against the wall.

It creates a powerful moment as the vault inhabitants flee, and before that, it serves as a somber memorial of fallen Wasteland Scouts. Each image is a Fallout cosplayer from our facebook fanpage submitted for the door.
